These pups are then also born live. Baby sharks eat each other in the womb<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">Sand tiger shark babies are thrown into a fight for survival right from the beginning \u2013 while still inside their mother.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">Female sand tiger sharks have two uteruses, and as many as\u00a0<a class=\"LinkUrl-styles__LinkUrlStyled-sc-f4e3b82f-0 eGAhOs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/animal-magic\/2015\/oct\/02\/zoology-notes-sand-tiger-grey-nurse-shark-cannibalism-in-utero\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five young grow in each<\/a>. The embryos feed on their siblings, however, until there is only one left. They prefer to hang out with\u00a0<a class=\"LinkUrl-styles__LinkUrlStyled-sc-f4e3b82f-0 eGAhOs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0003347209002668\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other lemon sharks their size<\/a>\u00a0and ones\u00a0<a class=\"LinkUrl-styles__LinkUrlStyled-sc-f4e3b82f-0 eGAhOs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0022098117300035?via=ihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">they&#8217;ve met before<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">Great whites may even have best friends. And in Victorian Britain, it became a favoured accessory for cabinet makers (who called it &#8220;shagreen&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">Instead of scales, shark skin is studded with numerous tiny &#8220;teeth&#8221; \u2013 called denticles \u2013 which are flattened by the creature&#8217;s forward movement of water, reducing aerodynamic drag. These allow sharks to sense electrical impulses generated by the muscle contractions of nearby animals \u2013 for example,\u00a0<a class=\"LinkUrl-styles__LinkUrlStyled-sc-f4e3b82f-0 eGAhOs\" href=\"https:\/\/utmsi.utexas.edu\/science-and-the-sea\/radio-program\/ampullae-of-lorenzini\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a beating heart<\/a>. Many of these ancient fish may not have\u00a0<a class=\"LinkUrl-styles__LinkUrlStyled-sc-f4e3b82f-0 eGAhOs\" href=\"https:\/\/australian.museum\/publications\/sharks\/what-is-a-shark\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technically been sharks<\/a>, but they were related to them. Then, 195 million years ago, the oldest-known group of modern sharks arrived, with their flexible, protruding jaws and speedier swimming prowess.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">Today, there are around\u00a0<a class=\"LinkUrl-styles__LinkUrlStyled-sc-f4e3b82f-0 eGAhOs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0960982225016380\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">500 species of shark<\/a>.
